Variety: A Nirvana Oral History

Yes, I worked with Nirvana!

In 2021, for the 30th anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s historic Nevermind album on DGC, Variety assembled some of the indie/street-level marketers to recount that amazing time. As College and Metal promotion for DGC at that time, I was present for the very first spin of Smells Like Teen Spirit (on KXLU, Los Angeles) and numerous good times with the band as they took over the music business and the world in 1991-2.

This article by my old pal Jem Aswad tells some great stories. In 1991, Jem was Metal editor at CMJ New Music Report, and was one of their very first and most ardent supporters as DGC rolled out Nevermind. I am also pleased that this article mentions my late colleague Susie Tennant. She got the entire city of Seattle rooting for Nirvana’s success and joking about Nelson, Cadillacs and Amex cards (the talismans of major label-hood we brought with us) when it could have easily turned against Nirvana. Superstars who left us too soon in the case of both Susie and Kurt.
